Numbing cream and tattoo ink: why grease is the real issue

Search “numbing cream” and “tattoo” together and you’ll find artists who won’t work with it and artists who keep a tube in the drawer. That split confuses people, so it’s worth explaining where it actually comes from.

The problem is grease, not numbing

Most objections to numbing cream have nothing to do with the numbing. They’re about what the product leaves behind.

An oily or petroleum-based cream leaves residue sitting on the skin. That residue stops stencils adhering properly, makes the needle skate instead of sit, and has the artist wiping the area every few minutes. That is the complaint behind most “I don’t work with numbing cream” policies, and it’s a fair one.

A water-based, non-greasy formula doesn’t behave that way. It absorbs and leaves the surface clean and dry to work on.

Dr. Care is water-based and non-greasy. Wipe the area before your artist starts and the skin works normally under the needle.

The other half of the problem

The second reason artists get frustrated is being told nothing. Someone applies a product without mentioning it, and the artist is working on skin that behaves differently from what they expected, with no idea why.

That is entirely avoidable and costs you one sentence.

What to do

Ask when you book. Not on the day. If your artist has a preference, you both have time to work around it.

Say what you used and when. Product name and application time. Five seconds.

Wipe it off properly. Clean skin before the needle. This matters more than anything else on this page.

Follow their aftercare. They know the piece and your skin.

The bigger picture

Plenty of people put off work they want, or cut sessions short, because of pain they didn’t need to sit through. A cream that numbs properly and wipes away clean solves that without getting in the artist’s way.

Apply 60–90 minutes beforehand, thick even layer on clean skin, cover with cling film, wipe before they start. Full instructions are in our FAQ.
